    Cyrus Avery founded the U.S. 66 Highway Association and coined the route’s nickname, “Main Street of America.”

    When Congress passed expanded legislation in 1925, including provisions for numbering and mapping highways, Cyrus Avery of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and John Woodruff of Springfield, Missouri began lobbying for what they called the "Main Street of America."
