Since Julie Andrews had already starred in "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music" by the time I don't know if she's the "songstress to be" in the question, but her character was certainly a missionary's wife. However, a 21-year old Bette Midler starred in an uncredited role as a passenger listening to Abner Hale's sermon. It was Midler's first film role, and earned her the money to move to New York and start her theater and singing career.
