If your asking me to "give me your answer do" here goes...
Arthur C Clarke, the author of the short story "The Sentinel" on which the film was based, insisted that Kubrick use "Daisy Bell" in the film, having heard a Bell Labs physicist called John Pierce demonstrate the song on a voice synthesiser.
