Origin: 1758
Among other things, American Indians even taught the newcomers from Europe how to walk: in the woods, in a group--best to go one behind the other, in single file. This was termed Indian file as early as 1758 in Massachusetts: "Set out for Fort Edward in an Indian file, Major Putnam in the front." And Indian file it has been ever since.

In Germany it's called Gänsemarsch ("Goose march"). In Denmark and Norway the word "Gåsemarsj" means the same.
