Alexander Graham Bell probably thought he had better ideas sending telegraphs over the wire in a wide variety of ways. Before the telephone there was his other big invention - the harmonic telegraph, which could send multipal telegraphs over a wire simultaneously. He thought there were other, better ways of transfering information (such as the photophone, a transmiter using lightwaves), but nothing would come of those inventions. His wife wouldn't have cared about the telephone on account of her deafness.
