Mercury is next to the sun so the surface heats up to 427 °C on the side facing the sun. As any atmosphere that might trap heat has long since boiled off the planet and planetary rock being a great insulator, the temperature drops to −183 °C on the side away from the Sun. http://www.bbc.co.uk/solarsystem/sun_and_planets/mercury_(planet)
Extinction - not a pretty thought yet we have many species that are critically endangered of disappearing forever. Education and conservation are the answer!
