According to the Oxford English dictionary, 3rd edition : a fumarole is a hole or vent through which vapour issues from a volcano; a smoke hole. The word was first used in 1811, from the 15th century French 'fumerolle' meaning a louvre. So tm it is both the volcano hole and a general smoke hole.
