"because years ago it was quicker and cheaper to draw one less finger on each hand. All the old cartoons had three fingers and a thumb.... Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd.... "

I also read somewhere else that it looks too clumsy for cartoon character to have five fingers

In the early cartoons, each frame was hand-drawn by an animator--painstaking and tedious work. No part of the human anatomy is harder to draw than a hand, and it is very difficult to draw distinct fingers without making the whole hand look too large.
So in Disney the animals sport a thumb and three fingers, while humans like Snow White and Cinderella are spared the amputation.

The cast of the Simpsons, in an interview on Inside the Actors Studio, described why the animators told them the characters are four-fingered. Drawing a fifth finger takes extra time and carries extra expense. For these reasons the only character in the Simpsons to have five fingers is God.
