I believe that this was columnist Jack Anderson.
In 1972, he had to apologize to Senator Thomas Eagleton for reporting on the radio about drunken-driving arrests that he could not later authenticate. Mr. Eagleton had to withdraw as the Democratic Party nominee for vice president in the face of disclosures that he had received psychiatric treatment.
your "belief" is indeed correct,I have the newspaper that the retraction that Anderson was in but by that time the damage was done even though he apologized
