In what more or less monolingual neighbour country of Germany do people speak a language which they don't want to call German, but which nonetheless is a Low Franconian variant of that language?

    Question #117180. Asked by flem-ish. (Aug 31 10 4:02 AM)

In Strasbourg, France, I was able to get around speaking "Alemagne" (excuse my poor spelling), as it was close enough to German (my French is horrible). While in the rest of France it's hard to find anyone speaking any other language, in the Alsace region Germanic is actually quite popular.

Only a small area of Alsatia speaks a variant of Franconian (north-east), but definitely not Low Franconian. Most Alsatians practise "Alemannic".http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsatian_language
