Where did the expression to "eighty-six" something come from?

From the slang used in diners, soda fountains and other fast food places. 86 rhymes with nix, and meant either they were out of an item or to eject someone from the place. BTW, Maxwell Smart's number, 86, was chosen because of the above facts.
