Evidence of stained glass windows in churches and monasteries in Britain can be found as early as the 7th century. The earliest known reference dates from 675 CE when Benedict Biscop imported workmen from France to glaze the windows of the monastery of St Peter which he was building at Monkwearmouth.

The 8th chapter of the book of Kings has Solomon installing in his Temple what the Hebrew called "challonot sh'kufim atumim". While this is usually rendered in English as windows which are "wide [on the outside, and] narrow [on the inside", a more proper translation would be "transparent, sealed windows", or, in other words, glass. Certainly it ws a novelty back then and there, but the Bible depicted Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem as the work of a highly prosperous king in a nation that was on the rise.
