The Little Mermaid (1989) was the next fairy tale animation, although there were a number of animated features in the intervening years. Checking the origin for all the films between "Sleeoping Beauty" and "The Little Mermaid" shows that they are based on books. Of course, one might argue that "The Sword in the Stone", based on Arthurian legends, could be called a fairy tale, although it comes more directly from a book based on the legends. "The Little Mermaid" is based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name.

Sleeping Beauty is a 1959 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and based on the fairy tale "La Belle au bois dormant" by Charles Perrault. It was released to theatres on January 29, 1959 by Buena Vista Distribution. The sixteenth animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, it was the last fairy tale produced by Walt Disney (after his death, the studio returned to the genre with 1989's The Little Mermaid) due to its initial box office disappointment.
