The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Liu Xiaobo, a jailed Chinese Dissident, in a move that infuriated China and threatened to heighten tensions with the West by re-focusing international attention on Beijing's Human Rights record.

China responded by restricting online discussion and Western television reports about the award, while its Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying the decision violated the Nobel principles and could damage relations with Norway, where the independent Nobel Committee is based. It also summoned Norway's ambassador to Beijing for a meeting Friday evening to complain.

Defying earlier warnings from Beijing, the Nobel committee said it decided to give the prize to Mr. Liu—who was sentenced to prison in December for 11 years—for his "long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China."
