It's a caret. The same thing can be a circumflex accent, but when it is, it's got a letter sitting under it. As an independent character, it was a proof readers' mark in origin. It acquired computer significance much later. It's also used to indicate powers when you can't get the maths things right (like here...). 23 to the power 5 can be written 23^5 - this means the 5 should be a little one up in the air. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caret
