Their national pride was at an all-time low when they played the Russians in the second-to-last game in their event at the summer Olympics. The Russians, known for their recent invasion, were hated. But the Russians gave up four goals in a firece, bloody battle, and lost. Which team won what is the most famous game in the sport's history, and then went on to win the gold medal the next day?

Hungary is correct, though Wikipedia is incorrect in that it wasn't a semi-final match, the championship round was played in a round-robin format, the Hungary-USSR match just happened to be the penultimate match. My apologies for referring to the Soviets specifically as Russians, though the majority of their team was Russian.
