What does "gravitas" mean; and why have so many people been asking this same question?

    Question #118455. Asked by star_gazer. (Oct 29 10 8:31 PM)

    queproblema

Ha! As I was cooking his breakfast this morning, my husband, for whom English is a second language, asked me what "gravitas" meant. I immediately guessed someone had made a comment about Sarah Palin; sure enough, Karl Rove had! I told him it means weight or seriousness.

"Let's get this out of the way at the very start: Merriam-Webster defines the word 'gravitas' as follows:

noun --- high seriousness (as in a person's bearing or in the treatment of a subject)

"In fact, for much of the day, the terms 'gravitas' and 'gravitas definition' remained two of the top 10 Hot Searches on Google. As Surge Desk reported previously, there was more to Rove's comments, including a dig at Palin's new reality-television show, 'Sarah Palin's Alaska,' but Palin herself seems to be taking it all in stride."
