Mack the Knife was a Kurt Weill song with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, written in 1928 for the Threepenny Opera:

The song was inserted in the play shortly before its première in 1928, because Harald Paulsen, who created the role of Macheath, wished a more effective introduction of his character.
At the première it was performed by Kurt Gerron, a noted film and stage actor in Germany, who also played the part of the Police Chief Brown.
Lotte Lenya, who appeared in the show, was Weill's wife and later a Bond villainess. Darin's version, using English translations by Marc Blitzstein, mentions her name.
Weill/Brecht also composed the Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) covered by The Doors on their debut album.
