Driving over some hills I saw a sign than read "6% grade". How many degrees is that?

Question #118709. Asked by serpa. (Nov 13 10 10:29 PM)

A 6% grade means there is a change in height of 6 units over a horizontal distance of 100 units. So the tangent of our angle is 6/100 or 0.06.

From any good book of log tables (or an online convertor), arctan(0.06) is about 3.43 degrees.

This page has all the necessary diagrams and formulas.
