Though Lot's wife's name does not occur in the Bible, there are rumours she was called Edith. On what sources are those rumours based?

Jewish tradition and folklore names Lot's wife Edith or Ildeth.

Thus the momentous occasion of crossing the fine line of what is in the bible and what is commonly accepted as being there occurred. The Bible does not say what the name of Lot’s wife was - but the Jewish tradition of Midrash gives her a name.

By the by -- Midrash; plural midrashim, lit. "to investigate" or "study") is a homiletic method of biblical exegesis. The term also refers to the whole compilation of homiletic teachings on the Bible.

Midrash is a way of interpreting biblical stories that goes beyond simple distillation of religious, legal or moral teachings. It fills in many gaps left in the biblical narrative regarding events and personalities that are only hinted at.
