Why are men's silk neckties tapered at the bottom, while men's knitted neckties are not?

I think you might find the silk (etc) ties are cut with the warp and weft hanging diagonally, while the knitted ones have vertical construction. This way, you are seaming along a line of strength and not diagonally across the fabric. (Based in part on my reading of J.E. Gordon's 'Structures', which deals with all forms of stress from arches to Mlle Madeleine Vionnet and the bias cut for dresses, and in part on my dislike for knitted ties...) (Typed 'toes' there first - just got in fpom a cold journey.)
