Why are nine-volt batteries rectangular?

If I remember correctly, six 1.5V AAAA batteries are connected in series. (6X1.5 =9)

There's a picture here of a dissected 9V battery, showing 5 of the 6 AAAA cells that are bundled inside the roughly rectangular casing. The carbon-zinc cell that was originally used involves a chemical reaction which produces 1.5V of electric potential difference across its terminals. Joining them in series produces 6 x 15 = 9 volts.
