    After Michael had allied with Giorgio Basta to defeat the Hungarians in the Battle of Guruslau, Basta had ordered the assassination of Michael.

    General Giorgia Basta who had the protection of the Ottomans wanted control of Transylvania and ordered that Michael be assassinated on August 9, 1601.
