Do bike riders everywhere in the world mount a bicycle from the same side, irrespective of whether they're on roads with left or right hand driving?

From personal observation and research online, I'd say the side people mount their bikes depends on whether they're right-handed or left-handed - not on whether they're on roads with left or right hand driving. In France, for example, which is right-hand drive, most cyclists mount from the left, the same as in the UK.

There are undoubtedly some who can do it either way, but play a part. Most bike riders were taught by someone, and like balance, which leg you swing will stick from that first successful (but wobbly) take-off. (Do the riders of ladies' bikes show this same fixedness? Stepping through is less obvious than leg swinging. On the odd occasion I've ridden a low frame bike, I've still swung - which lends weight to the habit idea.)
By the way, 'right hand drive' is a term applied to cars (as found in the UK). 'Drive on right' is applied to roads (as in France). If you drive on the right, you have a left hand drive car. (An exception was Sweden, where the cars were largely left hand drive, but the rule of the road was drive on the left. Then they switched over.)

Something's eaten some of that post - 'habit may' should be in front of 'play a part'. It's been a hard day...
