Which 1950s fast food pioneer made millions, lost it, then started over as a franchisee of a rival fast food chain, appearing in their advertisements that he'd found a better version of his original product?

No matter how you slice it, I believe his first name is Frank and he wanted to make some dough.

Very true, Serp. Btw, I read that carnies first came up with the term "close but no cigar". Kinda cheesy, if you ask me.

It is true that carnies first came up with the "close but no cigar" term. Cigars used to be the first-place prize for the strength contest, and if the contestant just missed the target...well, they were close, but no cigar.

Good grief! You boys sure do enjoy playing in the sandbox.

    Where IS everybody?

Papa John may be better than the little hut, but I don't know when Frankie lost millions.

    You got it great2beme!

Carney, a Wichita State grad, after selling Pizza Hut to Pepsico, lost his millions as a venture capitalist and had to mortgage his house to buy his first Papa John franchise.
Papa John's founder at first didn't believe Carney was sincere, but later used him in advertisments, where Carney said: "Sorry boys, I found a better pizza" to a fake Pizza Hut Board of Directors.

Papa John's and Pizza Hut have been fierce rivals pretty much since then, suing and countersuing each other over various things.

QP you kitten, if we didn't play in the sandbox, we'd go in it, so be thankful! ;-)

Legend has it that the name "Shockers" first appeared in 1904 on a poster advertising a football game between Wichita State-then Fairmount College-and the Chilocco Indians. The team's manager chose the name because many of the players earned money during the off season harvesting (or "shocking") wheat in the surrounding fields.

When it came time to bring the name to life, students created WuShock – a big, bad, muscle-bound bundle of wheat – whose name was derived from a period in time when the university was simply known as Wichita University or WU.

Well, Dats has stopped horsing around--your new image looks as if it could be a John Singer Sargent, but maybe it isn't. I like it.

Fun thread. Most sandboxes probably do double as litter boxes!
