When I look up population size of a city in the United States for example, I always get something like this: Population - City 519,145 - Urban 3,499,840 - Metro 5,376,285, yet I look up Sydney, population: 4,336,374 is only one figure which is city plus suburbs, or Moscow 10,509,000 only one figure, city plus suburbs. To get the actual population of a US city as per Wikipedia, which figure do I use to give me city plus suburbs?

When I was 14, or so, I went into a used bookstore and bought a 1913 edition of Rand McNally & Co.'s New Census Atlas of the World. It cost $1.50 and I still have it. I have always loved geography and wound up getting my A.B. in it.
