    Who was Oprah Winfrey named after, although it was misspelled?

    		Oprah was named after "Orpah" the biblical character in the Book of Ruth, however her family and friends could not properly pronounce "Orpah"

    		Most people I know pronounce Naomi's other daughter-in-law's name as OR-fuh, not OR-puh, which the spelling would indicate.

    In Spanish it is usually written "Orfa."

    I've no idea how the ancient Moabites may have pronounced it, but they sure didn't use our alphabet to spell it!

    		In Hebrew it is òøôä. The third letter (Peh) transliterates as a hard P, not a soft F. So the proper Biblical pronounciation is 'or-PAH. Some Moabite texts survive from a couple centuries after Orpah, and it seems the Moabite language was closer to Hebrew than Aramaic was, so I'm guessing the name would be the same in Moabite as in Hebrew.
