From where comes the term "charley horse"?

Apparently the term started out as a baseball colloquialism in reference to the 1880s pitcher Charley Radbourne, nicknamed "Old Hoss", who suffered from severe cramping during a game; the condition was then named by putting together his first name and the second half of his nickname.

It's a term that probably causes great mystification in the UK when looking at American stuff. I think I first encountered it in a BC cartoon and it was years before I found out what it was. I've never come across it in a UK context.
