The paper bag that you see in grocery stores today has its roots in 1852, when an entrepreneur named Francis Wolle patented a machine in the United States (and later in France and England) that made paper bags. In 1869 Wolle and his brother, along with other partners, formed the United Paper Bag Company to market and sell the paper bags.

Margaret E. Knight (1838-1914) was an employee in a paper bag factory when she invented a new machine part to make square bottoms for paper bags. Knight can be considered the mother of the grocery bag, she founded the Eastern Paper Bag Company in 1870. On 20 February, 1872, Luther Crowell also patented a machine that manufactured paper bags.

In 1868, while living in Springfield, Massachusetts, Knight invented a machine that folded and glued paper to form the flat bottomed brown paper bags familiar to shoppers today.
