The Black Boxes (typically there are two of them) are recording devices. One records all conversation in the cockpit, the other records flight data (including pilot control inputs and technical problems). They are important in the case of accidents since their data can lead experts to the reason of the crash and prevent further occurrences. They are, by the way, not black but painted in a bright orange for best visibility.
