When a new 747 jet is assembled at the factory how do they get it to the airport for takeoff?

    It's already there.

The Boeing Everett plant, where 747s are assembled, is colocated with an airfield.

Same applies to all aircraft manufacturers, apart perhaps from those who make dismantleable things like gliders. Not having a suitable field would be comparable to building ocean liners in Birmingham. Yes, there is steel there - but not enough water. Airbus build bits of their planes at different sites, but the final assembly points have good airfields. (The parts have to go by road - too big to fly them. A wing is bad enough on the road.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus
