Found a site that gives all these facts about him:- His name is Rupert Giles. No middle name ever given. He is technically an on-again-off-again member of the Watcher's Council. He is - when he hasn't been fired - Watcher to Buffy Summers, the current Vampire Slayer. As a boy he wanted to be a fighter pilot or a grocer rather than a Watcher. His father and his grandmother were Watchers before him, but we don't know if this was his paternal or maternal grandmother. We also don't know about any of his family or if they are alive. He went to Oxford, then rebelled against his destiny and dropped out, falling in with Ethan Rayne and a group of others, with whom we know he raised a demon. We don't know what else they did or just what his relationship with Ethan was. During this time he was known a Ripper. After Randall was killed by Eyghon, he went back to become a Watcher. However, we don't know if this was directly in reaction to Randall's death or there were other factors. He was already in Sunnydale, working as the Sunnydale High librarian, when Buffy moved there from Los Angeles. Can he or can't he do magic? That's a toughie. He did in The Witch to save Buffy, but after that he seemed to imply more and more that it was something he was unable to do and left it to Willow, and later Willow and Tara together. His 'old friend' Olivia, calls him Ripper, something I've always found intriguing, especially since in Hush she decides she can't deal with his 'weird' life. When did she meet him and why does she call him Ripper rather than Rupert? He was either in love with or falling for Jenny Calendar when she was killed by Angelus. He was tortured by Angelus for information on how to open a vortex to Hell, but didn't break, only telling what he knew when he was tricked into believing he was talking to Jenny.
