What former colony did Britain test its first atomic bomb in?

    Question #120926. Asked by 29CoveRoad. (Mar 30 11 12:06 AM)

    gtho4

    downhere, in Australia

At dawn on 15 October 1953, the British detonated the first atomic bomb on the Australian mainland at Emu Field, about 480 kilometres north west of Woomera in the desert of South Australia (testing had begun at the Monte Bello Islands off the north coast of Western Australia the previous year). Contemporary accounts reported that the plume of smoke produced by the explosion resembled the profile of an Aboriginal person. A second bomb was exploded at Emu Field on 27 October.

After these detonations at Emu Field, the British decided that their program of tests might continue for 10 years or so and asked the Australian government if a more permanent proving ground might be established. Maralinga was chosen and regular British atomic testing began there on September 27, 1956. Seven atomic bombs were detonated at Maralinga in 1956 and 1957 with a further series of “minor trials” in which at least another 300 nuclear devices were exploded.

Atomic testing at these sites, and at Woomera, has left a lasting legacy. The sites were officially “cleaned up” in 1967, However, there are continued concerns about the effect of radiation exposure on the people involved in the tests. There have been numerous incidences of radiation sickness, chronic illness and birth defects amongst the Australian and British service personnel and in the Aboriginal communities on whose lands the tests occurred.

As a bit of background, the Long Range Weapons Establishment
was originally set up on 1st April 1947 for the testing of missiles, the first being launched on 22nd March 1949. The location was named Woomera from the Australian Aboriginal spear-throwing device, which enabled a spear to travel further ("long range") than when thrown with the unaided arm.

Britain's first nuclear test, Operation Hurricane, was carried out on Trimouille Island in the Monte Bello Islands on 3rd October 1952 and only later (1953, as given above by gth4) did testing move to Woomera. Testing also continued at Trimouille as well as at Christmas Island.

Where and when did the British first test the atomic bomb?

The first atomic bomb was exploded at a place called the 'Trinity Test Site'...were the bomb's designers trying to make some sort of religious metaphore when they named the place...if not, then what was the origion of 'Trinity' in the name of the location?

Some say Britain no longer has colonies, just "dependencies" or "overseas territories" but in my 2001 encyclopedia, Bermuda, British Indian Ocean Territory, Falkland Islands (crown colony), Montserrat (crown colony), Pitcairn Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands (crown colony) are referred to as colonies. What is correct?
