Thiopental sodium, or sodium pentothal, is a barbituate that causes a person to lose their inhibitions. It will not make a person tell the truth. What it does is cause a person to become super-communicative. Under its influence they will share things more readily but someone with extreme self-control can still hide the truth even after being given "truth serum".

Correct.
They do not work. Most courts of law will not permit evidence produced by drug analysis. Sodium pentothal, and the like, are considered no more accurate than alcohol.
