What orbits the earth every 96.2 minutes?

    Question #121071. Asked by 29CoveRoad. (Apr 13 11 2:41 AM)

This was the orbital period of Sputnik 1. This corresponded to an orbit that ranged from a minimum distance of 215 km (134 mi) from the surface of the Earth to a maximum of 939 km (583 mi).

The orbital period of any satellite depends on how far above the Earth' surface it is. This means that any other object with the same average orbital radius as that of Sputnik (which only lasted for 3 months in 1958) will have the same period.

You can experiment with this link to show the orbit altitude that leads to a period of 96.2 minutes.

But, seeing as the question uses the present tense, it might be the Hubble Space Telescope. This link cites a period between 96 and 97 minutes
