    How does a jewel thief know which string of pearls are worth stealing?

    It's all in the teeth, fake pearls and real pearls feel different when slid across the teeth......The same with restored porcelain/china you can feel the restoration with your teeth even though you can't see the 'mend'..

    This site recomends a number of tests for pearls. One of them is drilling a hole in the pearl; I wouldn't suggest that.

    Of course, in practical terms, you just steal what you can get away with at the time, and then sort out the saleable items later....
