    		That act applied primarily to (most of) the British Empire overseas. In the United Kingdom itself:

    'Slavery had been abolished in Great Britain in 1772 by Lord Mansfield in R v Knowles, ex parte Somersett'.

    		As it says in your source, the Slavery Abolition Act had some expections: The territories controlled by the East India Company in the Caribbean, he island of Ceylon and the island of St.Helena.

    		Whitehall in 1833 annonuced that all slaves in the British territories should be totally freed by 1840.The first British colony to emancipate its slaves was Trinidad in 1838.
