    he was insulted that Vercingetorix served him snails at a Gallic state dinner, Romans did not eat such things.

    I would agree if I said "escargot", but I said "snails". There is a culinary distinction between the two. Most people, including the french, would not eat "snails" (as the word indicates the animal as it exists in nature) but would enjoy a prepared platter of "escargot".

    Silly? I agree. But point is not to think too hard about what was clearly a joke :^)
