    On 17 February 1941 Maximilian Kolbe was arrested by the German Gestapo and imprisoned in the Pawiak prison. On May 28, he was transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner #16670.

    Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe (8 January 1894 รข€" 14 August 1941.
    Kolbe was a Franciscan friar from Poland, who volunteered to die in place of another prisoner with a wife and children following the escape of 3 men from the camp.. Kolbe was sent to Auschwitz for sheltering refugees from greater Poland, including 2000 Jews whom he hid in his friary.
