The Thames Tunnel is the first stable underwater tunnel in the world. It was constructed well because it used the (then) newly invented tunneling shield and was built in a place where other tunnels failed to stay up.

Thanks Adam; a site link would have been nice.
I was also looking for another reason that proves the Thames Tunnel was constructed well.

Here it is, good old wikipedia never fails.
Can't think of another reason... probably concealed somewhere in the wiki article.

The tunnel is still used today.
The tunnel was originally designed for, but never used by, horse-drawn carriages and now forms part of the London Overground railway network.
