Most children have a photographic memory until about the age of 4. Items are held in memory by remembering every detail. I've seen a child write a poem that he saw once by starting at the last letter and working his way backwards through the poem to the start. He was transcribing it from a picture in his head and backwards was as easy to him as forwards. At around 4 or 5, the brain starts to reorganise the information and starts to store it as associations between different things. If you see a man singing, you store it in your brain as the concept of man connected to the concept of singing. So you may not remember later what the song was. Some rare individuals retain the 'photographic memory', also known as 'eidetic' memory into later life.
