How many inches of snowfall equal the volume of water in one inch of rainfall?

    Question #12213. Asked by B.

It varies, depending how wet or dry the snow is, but on average it takes 10' of
snow to equal 1' of water. See www.weatherworks.com

I thought the equation was 1 inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow.

That is the usual equuation although, I seem to remember a discussion here that suggested that this could vary quite considerably depending on how aereated the snow was.
