In 1964 Lester B. Pearson (Prime Minister at the time) informed The House of Commons he wanted to adopted a distintive national flag. After a lot of suggestions, ideas and bureaucracy, the decision was made to use the design you see today. It was proclaim by Queen Elizabeth II to take effect February 15, 1965. It was raised for the first time on February 15, 1965 at noon on Parliment Hill.
