Why did Gary Gilmore's brother Michael change the spelling of his name to Mikal?

He changed the spelling of his first name while he was in high school (mid-1960s), and kept it. He doesn't have a reason. (his brother, Gary Gilmore, was the first to be executed after the death penalty was re-introduced in 1977) "Shot In The Heart" by Mikal Gilmore (at page 110 of 416): I was born February 9, 1951, at Portland's St. Vincent's Hopsital. My father was sixty-one and my mother was thirty-eight .. I was born as Michael, not Mikal.
