A movie character played by Buster Keaton and the name of a Sinclair Lewis novel share what name?

Question #122611. Asked by serpa. (Jul 23 11 10:48 PM)

It's not an exact match, but Sinclair Lewis wrote "Elmer Gantry".

Buster Keaton played a character named "Elmer" in a number of pictures:

"Allez Oop" (1934), "One Run Elmer" (1935), "The E-Flat Man" (1935), "Blue Blazes" (1936), "Love Nest on Wheels" (1937), and "Pardon My Berth Marks" (1940).

I omitted the films where Keaton's character had a last name -- Elmer Dolittle (twice), Elmer Brown, Elmer Butts, Elmer Triple, and Elmer "Happy" Butterworth -- because I thought those would be even further off-mark.

Buster was Elmer Gantry in "Spite Marriage" of 1929.
