Although I can't find a 100% definate answer, I am going to say it was Pliny the Elder. He wrote the encyclopedia of nature and art, it consists of 37 books and is called Historia Naturalis. Among many topics, it contains concerns of the following: botany, horticulture, medicine and medicaments from plant and animal substances. VarAhamihita was a mathematician and both Confucius and Socrates were philosophers. That being said, the logical answer is Pliny the Elder.

According to Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, garlic cures asthma, suppresses coughs, kills intestinal parasites and as an aphrodisiac among other things. Garlic as an aphrodisiac?!?
