Three men became the first to hold certain national or international political positions in 1773, 1952 and 1966 respectively. If all have a name linked to a very famous earlier date who are they?

The Battle of Hastings (1066) was a contest between King Harold II and William of Normandy.

1773- Warren Hastings became the first Governor-General of India.

1952- Harold Alexander became the first Earl Alexander of Tunis.

    1966- ???

Half of the battle is won for getting that the link is Hastings (hence 1066 and all that) and for finding that the 1773 leader was the controversial first Governon-General of India Warren Hastings.

Two more to go as the Harold is a nice try but we are looking for a national or international position not a mere earldom.
As another famous Hastings was often told, use the little grey cells mon ami.

A "mere" earldom. No kidding. Who wants to be an earl? And of Tunis, at that!

I see what's going on here. Three Hastings' not a Hastings, a Harold, and a William.

Lord Hastings Ismay, 1st Baron Ismay, was the first Secretary-General of NATO, appointed 1952.

Hastings Banda was the first President of Malawi beginning 1966. Banda was actually Prime Minister of Malawi from '64 to '66--when the country adopted a new constitution and the office of President was created.
