I heard another great story: A man was robbed in Central Park NYC. He didn't have cash, but the robber agreed to accept a check. The victim wrote "mugging" on the memo. The bank was alerted and the bad guy was arrested while attempting to cash it. True, partly true or urban myth?

Found an article from 1994 in the Sun Sentinel.

    http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1994-03-26/news/9403260082_1_mugger-bank-teller-robbery

The article states that the guy was only able to pay 12.50 and the robber forced him to write a $300 check. It doesn't mention that he wrote "mugging" in the memo.

When he went to cash it the clerk was suspicious of the man and alerted the police.

Since it doesn't mention the "mugging" memo, I'd say it is partially true.

Here's a link to the original newspaper article that is being referred to: http://www.newspaperarchive.com/SiteMap/FreePdfPreview.aspx?img=112030790

This article seems to imply that the mugging happened in Charleston, WV and not in Central Park and that the clerk became suspicious because the signature on the check wasn't the usual one.

I heard another great story.... A construction worker carrying a sheet of plywood past an open breezeway was swept off the seventh floor of a building. He held onto the plywood during his downward journey and glided across a four lane street then crashed through a pate glass window of an opposite building. He survived relatively intact. True, partly true or urban myth?

I heard a great story. In the 1960's a freighter carrying a cargo of tapioca caught fire on the Thames River. The heat of the fire combined with water from fire hoses cooked the tapioca causing the expanded mass to spill out of the cargo holds and cover the ship. True, partly true or urban legend?

I was recently at a US Goverment office to make a payment and was told they did not accept cash. Printed on my money is that it is "legal tender for all debts, public and private." Can they legally not accept cash?
