What is the origin of red meaning stop and green meaning go?

Question #123224. Asked by vbonina. (Aug 23 11 1:50 PM)

The color red denotes 'danger'. The color green for 'go' was originally to be white. Unfortunately, when a red lens fell out of its housing, the remaining white color indicated the way was clear, the train proceeded and it resulted in a crash.
