Is it true that one of the reasons the Mayflower pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock instead of their intended destination of Virginia was the need to brew more beer?

    Question #12325. Asked by Teresa.

    l3i7l

I have seen this beer story before, but have not been able to verify it.
Also, the rock with 1620 carved into it didn't appear until at least a hundred years later. There is no mention of any big rock in the historical accounts.
Another account says that the original Mayflower destination was to have been the mouth of the Hudson River, the future site of New York, which was within the bounds of the Virginia Company's charter and authority. However, the ship's captain, Christopher Jones, had been bribed to land elsewhere, and found safe harbor in Cape Cod Bay, coming ashore at the site of present-day Provincetown. After further exploring Cape Cod they found the harbor they recognized from Capt. John Smith's maps as Plimoth (Plymouth). They had found their new home.
Because they landed outside the bounds of the Virginia Company, the non-Pilgrims declared that they were free of any commands. Responding quickly, the Pilgrim leaders composed a short statement of self-government , which was signed by almost all of the adult men. Thus the Mayflower Compact became the first written constitution in North America.
